Be sure to check the list of folks partying with me today so you can see all their super projects!
So let's get this party started!!
I am so excited about this project! I have been DYING to do a project with a zebra pattern, and this was the perfect opportunity. I just needed the PERFECT piece of furniture!
Enter this little beauty that I found at a CREEPY estate sale!
Not much to look at, but tons of potential!
I knew the table had some sticky drawers so I checked those out as soon as I got home. Much to my satisfaction I found that someone had stuck some metal tacks in the wood, and this was all that was making the drawers stick! Out they came!
Next, the top of the table was a little warped from rain.
So I busted out my palm sander and went to town. Within a few minutes it had a nice, even edge. I patched up all the cracks and holes with spackle.
First I painted it in a gorgeous aqua from Sherwin Williams. Now time for the fun!!
I used my ScotchBlue Painter's Tape with Edge-Lock™ Paint LineProtector to tape off a square section on the top:
This area got painted white. Once it was dry, I applied ScotchBlue Painter's Tape with Edge-Lock™ Paint Line Protector to the entire square surface. I found a zebra pattern I liked online and sketched this pattern on the tape.
I drew slashes through the parts of the pattern that I wanted cut out. I then used an exacto knife to cut these pieces out. This is when I started to get excited!
I painted over these areas with a homemade mixture of gray, then pulled the tape off before the paint was dry.
There were two things that I really liked about this tape:
First, it is sticky, and sticks to the project instead of peeling off. BUT it doesn't peel off your paint when you're done. Double points.
Second, the lines are crisp, for real! I didn't go over the tape with the base coat first and the only places where I had any bleed through is where I accidently lifted the tape when cutting it with the exacto knife.
So yeah, back to peeling off the tape....
!VIOLA! Zebra! Look at those crisp zebra stripes!!
I love how the hardware pops off the aqua!
I painted the inside of the drawers to match the rest of the end table. This is the first time I've painted the inside of a drawer, and I LOVE it!!
Here is a close-up of the pattern:
She makes me smile!! So exotic and pretty!

ScotchBlueBrand reached out to me to participate in the ScotchBlue Painting Party to celebrate the launch of their new ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape with Edge-Lock Paint Line Protector. My post represents my honest experience with ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape. I am not being paid for my answers, but I did receive ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape to assist in completion.
Oh, wow! That is beautiful, Kate!
ReplyDeletethat is soooo awesome!
ReplyDeletei was supposed to participate but had to back out since we had just sold our home and i had no idea where i'd be. i sm so sad about it!
Since you posted that nightstand on Facebook I've been wondering how you got that zebra pattern on there! It looks awesome! Oh, and I'll take some tape :)
ReplyDeleteThat looks great! Quick question, when you used the exacto knife to cut the pattern out, did it leave any knife marks on your tabletop? I'm working (meaning, it's an idea in my head and no work has been done yet) on my kids' bathroom and this would be great for some designs I have in mind!
ReplyDeleteThat is absolutely gorgeous! I would love a chance at winning some tape. We're closing on a new house tomorrow morning and it's completely covered in wall paper. I would use the tape after I finally get the paper off and start painting! It's not that original, but I would be grateful.
ReplyDeleteWoohooo! I love finding someone who likes making old things new again! I am currently working on an old dresser and this has given me ideas.....
ReplyDeleteOMG! You won't believe this but I have one of those EXACT tables here at my house (one large drawer instead of two). I brought the laptop INTO the guest room to check - yup, TWINS!
ReplyDeleteAnd, to make this even freakier, I had just told hubs last week that I was planning to paint it black and to a LEOPARD top!!!
Ok, so weird.....yet so awesome!
this looks SO awesome!! LOVING THE ZEBRA STRIPES!!
ReplyDeleteI already wrote on KD Designs blog so don't know if I can do it again but just incase, You know I'll be using it on my next desk project :)
Holy crap! This is an amazing transformation. Pure genius. LOVE the aqua. And great idea to do gray/white zebra stripes. What a creative way to use the painter's tape!
ReplyDeleteP.S. Found this post through the ScotchBlue painting party, and I'm a follower now. Love your blog!
ReplyDeletewoohoo! Your table looks so good! It's very, very pretty. I love the pattern AND the color.
ReplyDeleteHow did you keep from cutting into the table with the exacto knife?
gail
ps not entering, just stopping by to see what you did!
That turned out amazing! Thanks for sharing your tutorial. Did you have any problem cutting the wood when you used the exacto knife? I would probably paint a striped wall if I won the tape.
ReplyDeleteI can see for the pattern you did, this tape is AMAZING! I have to work on a coffee table is long and have two wings, painting a design on the center. I absolutely NEED this tape! Thanks for share your great Job!
ReplyDeleteI'm painting all the walls in my house and not to good at not getting it on my trim. Also i want to do the same thing that Maison Decor did in her hallway in my halllway.
ReplyDeleteThanks
Love your project. I need some of this tape to paint my china- cabinet-turned-craft cabinet...maybe chevrons?
ReplyDeleteI am seriously loving blue/turquoise lately. I have got to paint something with it soon! I love how your table turned out - you are super talented doing that zebra on the top.
ReplyDeleteVery impressive! I love it!
ReplyDeleteevie @ brown paper packages
soooooooo pretty! love the colors you choose and that zebra is just plain fabulous!
ReplyDeleteWow, that looks awesome! The combination of the turquoise and the zebra print makes it really eye-catching!
ReplyDeleteWow! What a great idea...I never thought of the zebra stripes! I have a dresser exactly like the table you have. Now I want to find a table like that! I need to search. The dresser is my daughter's & I just painted it a few months ago & the table would be a perfect little night stand or vanity table for her. I might just have to add the zebra stripes to her dresser like you did. I could use some scotch blue painting tape to do that & get some nice crisp lines just like yours! Beautiful, good job!
ReplyDeleteYou can take a peek at my dresser here, we even painted them the same colors!
